William Carpenter was born in Culpeper (now Madison) County,
Virginia, May 20, 1762, but he later cast his fortune with Kentucky,
founding the Carpenter family here and being one of the Boone County's
pioneers.
He seemed to have studied theology under the Rev. G. Henkel and as he was a member of the Pennsylvania Ministerium,
it is likely that he was ordained by that body.
His ordination must have been satisfactory for he was called upon to minister in Episcopal pulpits without question.
He was, however, Lutheran in faith and ministered in the Hebron Lutheran Church in Virginia for twenty-six years.
Then he became the Father of the church organization founded here in Boone County, KY and ministered here for nearly 20 years.
It has been said of him that he never laced the comforts and never craved the luxuries.
He was a typical pioneer of the better class and presented a distinguished appearance in his Colonial costume,
with his knee breeches, which he wore up to the time of his death.
Of William Carpenter, pioneer preacher and philanthropist, it may truly be said that
he devoted his entire life to the uplift of humanity,
and the memory and
influence of the good he did assuredly was not "interred with his bones."(1)
1778 ~ In 1778, when he was in his sixteenth year, we find him entering the Revolutionary Army, filled with patriotic ardour, and deeply interested in the principles involved in this issue. He was present at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis, and participated in other memorable scenes in our early history, which exerted an influence upon his future character. He often, in after life, recounted the hardships which he and his fellow soldiers endured, and the great privations which they suffered, frequently subsisting two or three days without their rations, and then receiving only a meager allowance of corn-meal ---this he would hastily mix with a little water in his handkerchief, and, after covering it with oak leaves, would lay it on a bed of warm coals until it was baked --- and then would partake of his homely meal with the greatest zest.
1787 ~ His identification with clerical affairs began with his twenty-fifth year and his early career was passed in his native county in Virginia. Twenty-six years of this time he served as pastor of the Hebron church in his native county in Virginia
1794 ~ 3 NOV ~ Rev. William Carpenter married Mary "Polly" Aylor in Madison County, Virginia, daughter of Henry Aylor and Barbara Carpenter.
She was born 10 MAY 1774 in Culpeper (now Madison) County, VA
1804 ~ TRIP TO BOONE COUNTY KY ~ Rev. Carpenter who was contemplated removing to Kentucky's fertile acres, made a trip of inspection to Boone county in 1804, but it was fully nine years later when he returned and settled there permanently.(1) Rev. Lentz, claiming to have the journal of Rev. Carpenter before him, says the trip cost Rev. Carpenter eighteen pounds. Rev. Carpenter did not record the purposes of his trip, but it is known that, in the following year, a large contingent of people left Madison for Kentucky. The group was said to consist of George Rouse, Elizabeth Rouse, John House, Milly House, Frederick Zimmerman, Rose Zimmerman, Ephraim Tanner, Susanna Tanner, John Rouse, Nancy Rouse, and Elizabeth Hoffman. They are said to have arrived on November 25, 1805. At this time, Burlington, the county seat of Boone County consisted of a few log houses, a log court house, and log jail. The town of Florence did not exist at this date. Across the Ohio River, Cincinnati consisted o f two brick houses and two frame houses. Some of the early information was drawn from the iscourse, "A History of the Evangelical Lutheran Congregation of Hopeful Church, Boone Co, Ky.", dated January 6, 1854.

1813 ~ Rev. Carpenter made a return trip to Kentucky, located near Florence in Boone County, where he became the First Pastor of the Hopeful Lutheran Church and served for nearly twenty years. By heritage and his own activities he was a man of means and he secured a large farm in the new home, upon which he lived with his family and slaves during the remained of his lifetime. As he asked and received no salary for his ministerial labors a farm was a practical necessity. This tract was located near the present town of Florence and was an attractive and valuable property and his family of boys and his slaves cleared and tilled it.
1823 ~ On May 16, Rev. William Carpenter wrote a letter to the trustees of the Hopeful congregation giving his views on obtaining a stove for the church, and also the subject of beginning a Sunday School.

1832 ~ "On the 10th of July, 1832, Father Carpenter wrote to Rev. Jacob Crigler of Berlin, Pa., in which he said: "I have now been preaching the blessed gospel for a space of forty-five years, this last spring. I was about twenty-five when I began, and am now a little upwards of three score and ten; and according to the course of nature and my feelings, I cannot possibly hold out much longer. We may indeed expect the ordinary blessings of divine Providence, but cannot expect miracles. I have often had heavy thoughts about my little congregation here in the wilderness." Rev. Carpenter urged Rev. Jacob Crigler to come and take charge of the congregation. Writing of a communion service, he wrote: "On Whitsuntide we had the Sacraments in our church, and I had the pleasure of seeing our old father-in-law, your two brothers and their wives at the communion table, but too many of the members stood back that I could have wished to have seen there. There were only twenty-one communicants, and a few years back I had as many as sixty-two."(2)
1833 ~ 18 FEB ~ Rev. Carpenter passed on to heaven and was buried in the farm family cemetery in Florence, Boone County, KY
1834 ~ 28 AUG ~ his wife Mary "Polly" (Aylor) Carpenter passed on to heaven in Boone County, KY and was buried there also in the farm family cemetery.
